The Australia Indonesia Disability Research and Network (AIDRAN) once again held its biennial conference titled “International Conference on Disability Rights (ICDR): Advancing Disability Rights: Disability Inclusive Development Reimagined” at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol) UGM, Yogyakarta, from November 21 to 23, 2023. This conference, held for the third time, is a collaboration between AIDRAN, Universitas Gadjah Mada, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fisipol UGM), and the Australian Catholic University (ACU) in Australia, and is supported by the Australia-Indonesia Partnership Towards an Inclusive Society (INKLUSI).
A total of 113 participants from 10 countries (Australia, India, Sri Lanka, the UK, Lithuania, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Iraq, and Indonesia) actively participated in the conference, the majority of whom are persons with disabilities. Various themes in disability studies will be discussed during this event. These include: the fulfillment of basic rights as stipulated in Law No. 8 on Persons with Disabilities; access to public services such as education, healthcare, and information; the utilization of digital technology; infrastructure accessibility; and several other issues related to the involvement and participation of persons with disabilities in social, economic, and cultural life.
In addition to the themes above, ICDR 2023 also presented diverse perspectives delivered by various actors, namely persons with disabilities, academics and researchers, policymakers, students, activists from multiple disability organizations, and disability rights advocates from various countries, particularly Australia and Indonesia. Through this conference, AIDRAN also encourages UGM to become an inclusive campus through campus policies and the provision of disability-friendly facilities and infrastructure.
